DENNIS FERRER SET TO ROCK CAPE TOWN

By Nick Kaoma

You’ve been dancing to his songs for years now. Your favourite local DJs [Fresh, Oskido, Glen Lewis etc] have been featuring his songs on their compilations zealously. He is influenced by funk, rock, hip hop, disco and soul. Ibiza is his playground. Bronx, New York is his birth place. DENNIS FERRER is his name and he has flown all the way from New York to rock us Capetonians, Durbanites, Joburgers, Sowetans, and Portelizabethians till we literally ‘Touch The Sky’.

Yes Sir, the songwriter/producer that brought us club anthems such as “Church lady”, “I Can’t Go Under” and the No.1 house track in the country for a while now “Touched The Sky”, is going to be shutting down Bree Street in Cape Town as house fanatics assemble to pay their respects to THE MAN. The temple of Roosevelt with its lush upholstery and décor will be given a baptism of fire by the churchgoers who will dance the night away in worship of the new Prince of House Music.

Dennis Ferrer is without doubt one of the most well rounded producer/song-writers in dance music, let alone house. He's produced myriad styles (deep, ambient, acid techno, tech, gospel, Afro, soulful), and has collaborated with masters including Damon Wild, Kerri Chandler and Jerome Sydenham. It's an apprenticeship that many aspiring producers would trade their right arm for, and by combining this with strong ideas and passion, his consistency and quality over the last five years has been peerless.

Dennis Ferrer’s debut artist album The World As I See (King Street / Defected), released early in February of this year is an amalgamation of global sounds, expertly honed into a soul-stirring, modern house collection which moves from futuristic gospel, “Church Lady”, to the afro-techish “Transitions” to the hip house of “P 2 Da J”, to the Madonna-esque pop meets gospel of “Touched The Sky”. The Defected In the House mix CD released in the spring sealed his status as one of the top house DJ’s in the world.

Dennis F will be supported by our very own Oskido, whose latest compilation album, Oskido’s Church Grooves – The 6th Commandment, has already gone gold and is set to monopolize summer gatherings from ekasi to the `burbs.

The Touch the Sky Tour, which is brought to you courtesy of Miller Genuine Draft and Global Breakthrough, has already played in 4 cities across the country and will soon be hitting Port Elizabeth and Soweto on the 12th and 13th of October respectively.

So let’s go to church people while the sermon is still on!

[Ed's note: check out Encore later this week for an exlusive interview with The Man himself, Dennis Ferrer]
