To say that the long awaited gig, which featured a packed line-up of over 14 of Cape Town’s tightest MCees, was a memorable show would be an understatement of note.

The results of D-Planet’s hard work shone through last night; all those mad hours of tin banging and beat making enabled him to put together jaw-dropping production for all the bangers on the Nando’s-hot Planetary Assault album. These joints were of course performed last night in the most emphatic fashion by the typically overzealous MCees on stage.

The Roosevelt night club on Bree Street in Cape Town had midgets standing on speaker tops, groupies leaching onto the front row and wannabes shaking the hands of the performers while on stage. In a nutshell, it was a pretty good night for Cape Town hip hop.

However, listening to the performers needed concentration and much
attentiveness though as the sound wasn’t top notch by any measure, but for the hardcore fans, it was a no-brainer, singing along was no mission, only lip reading was required!

The Butan giveaways also made up for the commercial dancehall which followed after the live acts had wrapped up their stuff. Apparently the dancehall was motivation enough for peeps to head home; after all, it was a weekday and even hip hop cats have to work!

While enthralled by the spectacular performances from Ratex, Rhamncwa,Driemaanskaap, Konfab, Oracle, Terror Mc, Archetypes and many more, a question sprung to mind: where is the Coloured hip hop community of Cape Town?

We must admit, even hip hop has racial issues. After attending a similar set-up last week at 'Cape Town's Battle of the year' I left with a similar question: Where is the black hip hop community of Cape Town? (Divisions anyone?)

Hey, don't mind me. This was D's night and it's about time Cape Town MCees received proper recognition; the flashing cameras and groupie love must have left the MCees feeling like real stars!

Shame, they've earned their stripes. Show some love! And oh like Celo says 'Ben Sharpa's back, I seen em.'

DAMN!!

Roosevelt was off the hook for sure. I haven't felt so much good energy at a hip hop gig in a minute!

The MCees were sharp as hell, the beats were banging and more importantly, the beautiful peeps of Cape Town came out in numbers. What more can a head ask for?

My moment of the evening though was when all the cats jumpped on one track (i think it was a mobb deep joint) and they just murdered it with ill rhymes.

F**K WHAT U HEARD, HIP HOP IS ALIVE AND WELL IN CT!!!

Just re-read the post. You asked about the coloured community in Cape Town...

Planetary Assault heavily features Jaak and Terror MC who both spit in Afrikaans. They were at the party.

DJ Eazy, Contro'Versy & DJ Azuhl were all in attendance with channel MK89. FOC (Fraternity of Cape Streets) were in the house. We had dancers from Hip Hop Connexion there too.

I thought me managed to attract one of the most 'mixed' crowds I've ever seen at a Hip Hop party in Cape Town.

i'm sick and tired of people trying to chat bullshit about the black/coloured hiphop thing in cape town. take your head out of your ass for a sec. go to the cape town flickr group and look at the pics if you need evidence of the reality on the ground and tell me again that hiphop in cape town has a black/coloured issue. those who are stirring this issue need to come speak to me or shut the fuck up!

Hi all!
Thanks so much for the tongue lashes. To avoid sounding defensive like may. It is not a matter of colour. Devisions in hip hop is something that exists and me pointing it out should not be seen as something more than an eye opener. My statement was merely a cry out for variety. Cape Town is blessed with so much talent and variety, with influences form Mid, North, East West and even South of Africa. My statement on 'variety' was to high light how good our artists are and how we should have a combinaion of all of them
As for Uncut poetry, it is a space where where we embrace our art forms with out boundaries and limitations.
Variety is all I meant. If I have offended anyone, then good. Really check!

All on 1 stage, not on 1 stage at different times. The statement was purely genuine and out of concern.
