The 14th MTN SAMA Awards took place on Saturday 3 May to much fanfare and controversy. The Awards which are designed to celebrate SA’s top performing music stars were hosted at the Sun City Superbowl and were broadcasted live to millions of music-loving Mzansians.
As per usual, there was a lot of drama stemming from various quarters. Disgruntled artists like Arthur bitched and moaned about the lack of transparency at the wards. A little known DJ Sdunkero won the prestigious “song of the year” award for a track that most of us don’t know. The kwaito villain Mzekezeke made his first public appearance in years. Kabelo, the host, lashed out at tabloid journalists by calling them “overweight, miserable and unhappily single” shit-stirrers who enjoy nothing more than causing kak for artists. Unlike most reports that I have read in the media, I honestly think this was the best awards show in ages. Firstly, Kabelo once again shone as host of the ceremony; who ever thought the roughish Bouga Luv was a chilled, well-spoken, humorous guy that could charm the socks out of millions of viewers? I know I didn’t. The producers of the event also put their technical expertise to the test with a show that featured only small sound glitches here and there.
The well-chosen performers also added some much-needed pizzazz to the evening; the well-executed tribute for Lucky Dube which featured Freshlyground, Kwela Tebza and Dube’s former backing band, One People, was especially moving. It literally brought the house down!
Other highlights of the evening were HHP’s victory in the tightly-contested Best Rap Album category (is it just me or has this category taken over the kwaito category as the most anticipated? Further proof of kwaito’s slow demise). Jabba’s victory was long overdue as this was his first SAMA award in his 9 years of working in the music industry.
Cape Town-based and internationally-acclaimed band Freshlyground proved their worth by walking away with 4 awards. It was also the group’s first triumph at the SAMAs.
The most puzzling WTF (what the fuck) moment came courtesy of DJ Skundero; when accepting his “Song of the Year” award, he thanked TS Records for letting him win. Jees boss, what the fuck? Why don’t you thank the fans or MTN for getting your butt up there…..?
